As someone who works hands-on with dental labs every day here at 32DentaLab, I can tell you with confidence that digital dentistry is not coming - it is already here.
The labs that are thriving in 2025 are the ones that have made a deliberate shift. They are choosing smarter tools. They are reducing variability. And they are gaining back time without sacrificing quality.
The following five trends are not based on marketing predictions. They are based on what we are seeing in real dental labs across the country, combined with verified data, case studies, and first hand technical feedback from the field.
This is your guide to what is happening now and what your lab should be doing next.
AI is not replacing dental technicians. It is making them faster, more consistent, and less fatigued.
Modern dental CAD platforms such as Exocad and 3Shape have integrated AI modules that now assist with margin line detection, crown and bridge design proposals, occlusal balancing, and even auto generated full arch setups.
In the most recent release of Exocad DentalCAD 3.2 Elefsina, TruSmile AI now renders real time esthetic simulations, while AI Design creates full contour crown proposals based on tooth preparation and occlusal surfaces. According to Inside Dentistry, these upgrades are reducing design time significantly.
We have seen this play out in labs we serve. One partner lab upgraded their CAD stations and retrained their team using AI protocols. Within the first three months, they reported a 42 percent decrease in design time for molar crowns. Their remake rate also fell below 2 percent due to better margin detection and fewer chairside adjustments.
What to do next
Ensure you are using the most current version of your CAD software
Start by using AI on repetitive or simple restorations such as molars or premolars
Pair AI tools with our verified digital analog systems to ensure clean model transitions
3D printing used to be limited to diagnostic models and trays. Now, the materials are strong enough for final use restorations including long term temporaries, custom prosthetics, and even crowns and bridges.
Materials like BEGO VarseoSmile TriniQ and SprintRay OnX are approved for long term intraoral use. These resins combine flexural strength with esthetic clarity and can be post processed to meet the durability needs of day to day wear.
Many of the labs we support have now replaced up to 70 percent of their temporary crown workflows with additive manufacturing. One high production lab we work with used to rely on milling units exclusively. After switching to a print based workflow with digital analogs, they cut material costs per unit by over 60 percent.
What to do next
Invest in a high accuracy resin printer that supports biocompatible materials
Use analogs and screws specifically designed for 3D printing compatibility
Build a finishing and post curing protocol that prioritizes surface hardness and translucency
The shift from physical impressions to intraoral scanning has created a new challenge. Implant analogs that were designed for stone do not work well with 3D printed models. Labs need analog kits that were engineered for the tolerances of resin based workflows.
At 32DentaLab, we worked closely with labs to develop implant analog kits that lock precisely into printed models without over tightening or rotation. These systems use secure seating geometry and are compatible with the most common scan body libraries on the market.
One full service lab told us that their failure rate in printed implant models dropped from 11 percent to under 1 percent after switching to our digital kits. The most common issues we see, such as analog misfit, model distortion, and screw loosening, were completely eliminated when using the correct analogs and torque settings.
What to do next
Evaluate the analog systems you are using and confirm they are approved for digital workflows
Standardize your screw selection based on torque requirements and platform compatibility
Review scan body and implant platform libraries to ensure consistency from digital impression to printed model
Efficiency in a lab is no longer just about speed. It is about visibility, transparency, and consistency.
Cloud based lab software platforms are allowing labs to manage everything from Rx intake and client communication to billing and production timelines. Many labs are now enabling remote design, digital file storage, and client approvals in real time.
According to 3Shape, labs using their LMS platform have reported fewer bottlenecks, faster billing cycles, and stronger client retention due to real time case tracking and messaging.
One lab we work with in the Midwest used to have two full time admin staff managing phone calls, paper forms, and production calendars. After switching to a cloud platform and retraining their dental office clients, they were able to handle more than double the case volume without hiring additional staff.
What to do next
Choose a lab management platform that integrates with your CAD and printing software
Offer your clients a digital Rx form with dropdown selections that match your product SKUs
Set up email or text case status updates so clients know when their cases are ready
Patients and clinicians are becoming more environmentally conscious. That means labs need to consider their impact, from materials to packaging to production methods.
Labs we serve are increasingly asking for recyclable or compostable shipping supplies, reusable trays, and digital first workflows to reduce material waste. Even small changes, such as consolidating shipping boxes or batching production, have helped reduce overhead and environmental load.
At 32DentaLab, we are already moving our analog packaging to recyclable materials. We are also testing lower emission delivery methods for recurring bulk shipments.
This is not just a marketing tactic. It is a competitive advantage. Some dentists are choosing their lab partners based on their sustainability policies. Being able to show that your lab is reducing waste and using eco conscious supplies builds trust and long term loyalty.
What to do next
Switch to paper based packaging wherever possible
Offer digital Rx only to reduce paper use
Share your sustainability practices in your marketing materials and case presentations
Digital dentistry is not one big transformation. It is a series of connected upgrades. The labs that succeed in 2025 will be the ones who implement each part of the system intentionally and carefully.
At 32DentaLab, we believe in real solutions. We use what we sell. We test our analogs in digital, milled, and printed workflows. We partner with labs that want to improve - not just change.
If you are ready to upgrade part or all of your implant workflows, CAD systems or digital management tools, we are here to help you design the right system for your lab. From screws and scan body matching to analog packaging and digital workflow consulting, our team is available to guide every step.
Reach out to us. We will help you build the future of your lab one decision at a time.
